Teaching the new generations of teachers. On February 15th, Mrs. Venderley, A new teacher at Jasper High School, Took her students to USI for “Be A Teacher Day!” Mrs. Venderley Teaches ED professions, principles of teaching, and child adolescents. This trip was beneficial to the students who dream to be future educators. Students were able to see the campus and see all the programs that are available to the students. USI had guest speakers such as BJ Watts, who serves as the Executive Director for ‘OptIN’ and is on the Indiana State Board of Education, and attended USI as a student. “When I think about the teachers who really influenced me, I think of the ones who had expectations of me. Caring about your student is number one, if you don’t care about them you cannot affect them. The teachers who push you the most, are the ones that care about you the most. Give them the support they need but don’t change your expectations of the students.” When the all-important question of “why should people choose to teach” was asked, David Smith the superintendent of ENC answered “If you want to change lives if you want to have the opportunities, choose to teach. I still have kids that come up to me in their 50s that thank me, for everything I’ve done.” he then exclaimed, “Teachers enable every other job to exist”.
