Shriek Show - Waverly Hills Sanatorium Kate Shields & Abby Gehlhausen
For this first segment, we thought that we’d discuss somewhere not too far from here. Located in Louisville, Kentucky, the Waverly Hills Sanatorium is considered to be “haunted”. Before it became known as one of the most haunted places in America, the sanatorium was a large medical center. It was opened in 1910 and was primarily used for patients with tuberculosis. Unfortunately, tuberculosis was very deadly, so many lives were lost within the building walls. No doctors or employees were allowed to leave the sanatorium grounds, trying to prevent the spread. It was open for about 50 years until there was a treatment created. It was renovated into a nursing home for about 20 years until it closed again.
So how did this place get its reputation? Many people have investigated and wandered the halls of the sanatorium reporting various things. One of the most active places is a 600-foot body chute that deceased patients would be transported through. Another active place is “room 502”. It was claimed to have been housing the patients that were mentally ill and is said to be the site where a nurse took her own life. There are also claims from people of hearing voices, seeing apparitions, strange smells, and unexplained physical sensations.
The sanatorium offers different historical tours and investigations.
